Swatch: China Glaze Let’s Groove and the Deserted Island Question

Hey everybody, how are you doing? I hope you had a great weekend and are ready to kick some ass this week! I decided to do a light-hearted post to help you de-stress a little, so here we go 🙂

A few days ago, China Glazed asked an interesting question on Twitter: You’re stranded on a deserted island. What China Glaze polish do you have with you and which male (or female) celebrity is stuck with you?

My answer? China Glaze Let’s Groove and Ryan Gosling. Just for clarification though, I want the Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Love, not the Ryan Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl or even Blue Valentine. Granted you can see easily that this dude CAN ACT with the latter two, if I am stranded on a deserted island I prefer to be with someone social (and fine, really hot and muscular) if you catch my drift…

But why am I talking about Ryan Gosling? Oh yeah, back to China Glaze Let’s Groove!

(I got the idea of “drip pictures” from Beautezine. Jessica takes the most amazing drip pictures! Despite the fact that mine looks very much “homemade,” I find it pretty wacky)

Let’s Groove is a deep purple that has violet and red shimmer. It came out in 2009 with the Retro Diva collection, and though I was a bit late to discover and finally lay my hands on this gem, I am happy it is mine!!! It is deep, but nowhere as deep as for example China Glaze Midnight Ride (which I have yet to show you). It is not a purple that can be mistaken to be black even in low lighting. Contrary to a lot of the pictures I have found on the Internet, it is not blue-based or even a violet. On me it is actually a red-based purple. When I was taking swatch pictures however, I realized that in natural lighting camera tends to pick up all the blue/violet there ever is in this polish. Lo and behold:

While in reality, this is what you see:

I actually debated for a while whether to get this or not, because I was afraid it might pull too cool on me. Luckily that’s not the case! All I get is a rich red-based purple with an insane amount of beautiful shimmer!

The formula is nice and smooth, very easy to work with. I personally don’t like the China Glaze brush too much. It is a little too long, thus a little harder to control. Also, the top of the cap isn’t flat, so it doesn’t stand on its own when you flip it over. I guess you wouldn’t really need to do that, but I clean the neck of the bottle with nail polish remover after each use just so that I will be able to screw the cap on as tightly as possible, preventing the polish from drying out. With China Glaze, I have to hold it between my knees when I do that. Otherwise I have nothing to complain about packaging. It’s pretty sturdy!

I can’t really comment on wear time at the moment. You see, I have very soft nails (this condition is hereditary). Especially now that it’s winter, my nails just peel and break. I have recently got back on a 3-month course of vitamin supplement, so normally they should improve in a month or so. However, in the meantime, ANY nail polish chips very easily on me because it does not adhere to broken nails. Please excuse the super short nails at the moment.

Now I’ve got Let’s Groove on, when am I going to be shipped to a deserted island with Ryan Gosling? Hmm…

Who would YOU pick to be shipped off to a deserted island with you?

PS: Does anyone have any tips for healthier nails? Has anyone tried any products that claim to give you healthy nails? Did it work? If anything worked for you I’d LOVE to hear about it!

PPS: Are you following me on Twitter yet (@mostlysunnyblog)? That’s the way to go for more interaction, fun, and kitty pictures!

  1. here is one rejoicing! 😀
    the color looks so pretty.
i remember the retro diva collection. i think that 2009 season was so fine with many gorgeous collections but retro diva was a standout!

i am sure your supplements contains at least some biotin but i find it really helps. also omega 3s.
i am lucky with nails and hair so i rarely experience breakage but i still take supplements since i am getting old and i tend to change polish color often.
barielle products are really good for topical solutions.

    • Yay, another purple polish fiend. High five!

Let’s Groove is really pretty! I heard it’s a good dupe for NARS Purple Rain (which I don’t own so can’t compare, but there are comparison posts out there you can check). I wasn’t that much into cosmetics back in 2009, so anything is new to me lol

My supplement does contain biotin. Maybe I should get some omega 3s on top of that!

The strange thing is my hair is just fine (OK it gets dry because it’s very long, but nothing a good treatment can’t help with), it’s just my nails (it’s from my mum. Hers also break all the time)! Barielle isn’t available here, so I’ll have to find something that is but thanks for the recommendation Lena!

  2. I love this colour, it really looks gorgeous :). I never tried a china glaze nailpolish, but next month when I have some cash I’m going to order one or maybe two :). If I could pick one person to a desert island it would be my fiancé, as I really don’t know what celebrity I want to choose, hehe. I can’t really help you wth your nailproblem, it sounds annoying tho, nails breaking and stuff, have you consulted a docter or something?

    • Thanks Teri! You should try China Glaze. The new collection (Hunger Games) is super interesting, so maybe you should wait for that!

It’s sooo sweet. I didn’t know he’s already your fiance (thought it’s your boyfriend)!

I have talked to medical professionals, but they haven’t really given me any (better) advice. My supplement works, but it’s a 3-month course and once it’s over my nails are good for another 3 months. However, if I don’t go back on it after that my nails get crazy again. Heh.

      • Hehe, I still am used to calling him my boyfriend instead of fiancé ;). I’m really getting very addicted to nailpolish, and I alreadu have so many addictions, eeek! I doind that starting with a blog doesn’t help one bit, reading all the other blogs just gives me more and more things to wish for!
As for the nails, I know I’m very lucky with mine, I really hope you will find a cure for it, but I think everyone has his own weak point when it comes to the body :). My health is not really a strong point, and it’s trying out a lot of medicines and therapies, so I know how it kind of feels :).

  3. I love the drip picture!

For healthier nails, I like the Sally Hansen artifical nails rehab system, it’s 3 steps (though I only use the first one) and about $10. It works pretty well.

Also, Essie First Base basecoat is the BEST basecoat ever. It totally saved my nails. I’m going to do a full post on it soon and it’s just going to me be GUSHING for an entire post!

    • Thanks Emi!

I don’t think I get Sally Hansen here though. Have you tried any of the Essie nail treatments? I know they have a whole bunch. I have used OPI Nail Envy before, but it just got so thick and gloopy after a while so it wasn’t very nice.

My nail problem is not related to wearing nail polish at all. I have gone through long stretches of time without wearing any, but my nails wouldn’t improve a teeny bit because of that. At the moment I have OPI base coat, which does what it’s supposed to do. My nails are never stained from my nail polish. Once I run out I’ll try Essie though. Thanks for the recommendation!

  4. haha i’d love to be stranded with crazystupidlove Gosling as well! heck, I’d even take the Lars Gosling.
That color looks so flattering on you! I always shy away from China Glazes, just because the ones I have are on the thicker side, but I just might have to try this out!

    • Yay, high five for the Gosling fans!

You’re right about the formula being on the thicker side, but it’s not hard to work with. I just think they could improve the brushes a little. Keep me posted if you try it out!
