I’ve Got More Taupe: Make Up For Ever 20E Aqua Shadow!

Long-lasting eye makeup is good in my book, and when I had the chance to some of the Make Up For Ever’s new lines a while ago, I couldn’t resist taking 20E Aqua Shadow home! These are supposed to be waterproof and crease-resistant. Do they sound about perfect for summer?

Aqua Shadows come in 12 shades and contain 4 grams. 7 of them are light, shimmery/metallic shades like the 20E I am about to show you, and 5 are dark matte colors. Out of the whole bunch 20E caught my eye the most, and I couldn’t resist giving it a try!

There isn’t too much to be said about the “packaging,” though I do have to tell you that the cap fit on the pencil extremely well. You can close it up very snugly, which will prevent the shadow from drying out. Bonus point for that!

20E is a taupe, but a very shimmery champagne kind of taupe that I imagine is easier to wear. The finish is metallic, and if you blend it out you can see all the fine shimmer. It is a great all-over-the-lid shade as I find it pretty brightening. The texture spot-on. It is creamy enough to glide on easily, but not so creamy that it becomes too soft and melty. I have used it several times now, and still there is no need to sharpen it yet, so I imagine this pencil will last quite a while. The color payoff of 20E is excellent! I need one pass for vibrant, opaque color! Once it’s on, you have a little time to blend the edges out, but it sets fast, and once it sets it’s not going anywhere!

Without a primer, it lasts 8 hours on me. After that it starts creasing/fading a little on the inner corners close to my “crease” (OK this is hard to explain. My “crease” is tucked under my visible lids when my eyes are open. Does that make sense?). With a primer it lasts all day. Alternatively I actually don’t mind carrying this pencil with me for some touch-up after 8 hours. As a general rule I don’t, but this is so much easier to carry than other cream shadows I own, I don’t need a separate brush, and it doesn’t get messy when it fades a little.

Some more pictures with my eyes looking down so you can see the color on me. I used 20E all over my lids with some MAC Satin Taupe blended on the outer half. I find this color easy enough to pair with other shadows though, so don’t worry even if you are just beginning to play with eye makeup!

Excuse the weird expression, but here you see the metallic finish:

Bottom line: I would recommend Aqua Shadows (at least the light shimmery ones. I heard the matte ones work a little differently) for quick summer looks! They’re easy to use, hold up well, and easy to carry for quick touch-ups if you ever want to do that!

Have you tried the Aqua Shadows? What are your favorite jumbo pencils? How do you keep your eye makeup going in the height of summer?

  1. Hi Sunny, I absolutely LOVED #20E. It’s such a gorgeous color and has amazing lasting power even without a primer. I think I’ll have to wear it tomorrow morning after reading your post! ❤

    • Yup it is! It’s really pretty easy to use. Highly possibly easier than cream shadows in pots, because I can reach my inner corners more easily with the tip!

    • Hey Joyce, I think most metallic shades in the range lean warm, but you should definitely swatch them. The finish makes them a little more universal I think!

  2. I haven’t ever tried a pencil cream-shadow before–the tip always seemed a little too big for my small eyes and lids. But I was curious and heard good things, so I decided to grab a couple of the Milani ones instead. If I like them, I’ll probably go for the MUFE ones, as I already LOVE their Aqua Eyes liners. This color is gorgeous–congrats on your newest taupe. Are you hooked yet? 😛

    • Haha you should try these, Becca! My lids are small but this one is really easy to use, even for my inner corners. I think some taupes work well for me, but not all!

  3. I have both the shimmery and the matte and I feel the lighter shimmery ones easier to carry off. If I’m using the matte ones I apply them close to my lash line and smudge upwards. They do set fast. Sunny do you apply directly on lids or do you use a brush? I’m still experimenting on the bet way, or now it’s applying directly on lids and using my fingers to blend.

    • Hey Jacqueline! I apply directly before blending out with my fingers. I always do this with cream shadows, because all the eyeshadow brushes I own have natural bristles, and I’m not too sure if they’ll work with creamy products.

  4. I love MUFE and I love these pencils. I have 5 of them now. The last two I recently purchased were 20E and 24E. I have satin taupe so I’m going to try your look soon. Thank you!

    • Haha most of the time I prefer to have something that lasts longer than that, but it is impressive how well it lasts without a primer. With a primer it’s invincible!

    • Lucky you get Sephora, Jen! We don’t and this is the first jumbo pencil I own (to be fair I tried the NYX ones, but they wouldn’t stay on my lids for more than 5 minutes)!

      • Yeah, I really wanted to love the NYX ones, but I had the same problem. They wouldn’t dry down and they creased almost immediately. If you can get a hold of the Sephora ones, I really like them!

  6. So, so pretty! Does it dry your lids though? I wore my maybelline color eye tattoo today and my lids actually hurt they are so dry. I’m feeling wary of long lasting cream eyeshadow, snif!

    • Hey Christine, I don’t have problems with anything drying my lids out, and this is no exception. Too bad to hear long-wearing products do that to you! Have you tried to use them on top of a primer to see if things get better?

  7. I totally get what you mean by “crease” haha. I am glad you get 8 hours before any creasing. I have very oily eyelids so I don’t know if this will work 8 hours for me!

    • LOL it’s good to know I’m not the only on with a wacky “crease” like this one! My lids are normal to oily and this works fine. Even in Taipei it lasts ALL day on top of UDPP 🙂

  8. Looks lovely, kinda like Amethyst in the Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks. I prefer the Caviar Sticks to any stick e/s formula, however, because it’s one of the few things that actually lasts forever!
