Getting to Know Estee Lauder & the Makeup Tips I Learnt!

I confess: I used to think Estee Lauder is a bit of a “mom brand” until very recently (to be fair though, that’s what I used to think about most luxury brands until not so long ago). With their new counter in Brussels (Inno Rue Neuve for those who might be interested), I decided to take a closer look at the brand and what it has to offer. The lovely Nathalie helped me out and even did a little touch-up that transformed my look. Are you ready to see the before/after, hear about the tricks I learnt, and find out what’s new at Estee Lauder?

I was very interested in their new base products, so Nathalie matched me to my shade of Invisible Fluid Makeup (3WN1. It looked OK on the back of my hand, but without trying it on my face I can’t really say how well it matches. Still, if you’re around MAC NC30 and are looking for your shade, take a look at this one). The Matte Perfecting Primer is also something I would love to try. I don’t get as oily as I did anymore, but still. Growing up in Taiwan with combination skin has made me a little obsessed with mattifying products! With everybody launching their version of the BB cream, Estee Lauder has jumped on the bandwagon with theirs. I like the sufficient SPF factor (35), and the darker shade of the two matches my skin tone better.

TIP 1: Don’t over blend your foundation. Nathalie found that I have the tendency of really sheering foundation out (when I was trying stuff on the back of my hand), but foundations are not lotions. There is a line between blending it in and massaging it in!

TIP 2: Do you get a little shiny? Carry a compact of mattifying powder and retractable brush with you in your purse. Using the included-sponge might result in heavier application. Also you might smear the makeup you have on!

TIP 3: Mix your concealer with your eye cream to combat signs of fatigue effectively. Dabbing a little of that in the inner and outer corners will brighten/open your eyes!

Estee Lauder is apparently number one in Belgium when it comes to skincare products. I’ve heard people rave about the Advanced Night Repair. I got some sample packets and I can’t wait to try them out! I will keep you posted, but since they are sample packets it would be more of a first impression!

Good news to those of us who live in Belgium: the Pure Color Blushes and some other exciting makeup are coming here later this year (around October)! Word on the road is that they’re amazing, so I can’t wait to take a look!

I told Nathalie that I’ve always failed to do a nude lip and she asked if I use a lip liner. Bang! That was apparently the problem! Apparently a lip liner that is just a tad darker than your natural lip color can prevent you from having concealer lips. Note that I said a tad darker, and remember to blend the lipstick well! In this picture you see me with a nude lip that doesn’t make me look half dead, and I was pretty happy with it!

TIP 4: Try to define your lips with a lip liner that is ever-so-slightly darker than your natural lip color before putting a very nude lipstick on!

She also put a brighter purple in my outer v and lined my eyes in a more dramatic way with a purple eyeliner (Black Plum) to make them pop. I really like the color, and Black Plum held up well on my lids until I removed it later that night (it was also warm and very muggy that day, so I was very pleasantly surprised). See how that extra bit of purple makes my eyes brighter? I guess they don’t encourage brown-eyed girls to try purple for no reason!

TIP 5: Don’t be shy! If a little more color/more dramatic eyeliner works well for you, there’s no need to play safe all the time!

All in all it was a great experience, and I’m happy I walked away with so many useful tips!

What’s your experience with Estee Lauder? Have you tried anything that impressed you? What is a makeup tip you learnt recently that you’d like to share?

  1. Oh I love the purple on you, I find that Asians wear it so well, hehe. I love their BB cremes, it’s one of the better higher end ones in my opinion because they give decent protection and there are actually nice ingredients in it too! Great tips, especiaaly about finding the good nude lipshade 🙂

    • Thanks Teri! It’s true that purple/plum work really well for those with green/dark brown eyes! Now I know I need a lip liner to make shades that wash me out work!

  2. Haha I thought it was a mom brand myself for a while! I really do love their skincare products now though, the advanced night serum works well

  3. You look very pretty ! Estée Lauder is one of my all time favourite brands. It’s not very hip or trendy, always very classic but that’s what I like about it ! I’m curious when the primer will hit our stores, don’t think I have seen it here already, but I could be wrong 🙂

  4. you look refreshed and more youthful in these pictures!
i find the tip #3 very helpful. i need to use concealer but usually skip it because of the dryness that comes later on.

    • Thanks Lena! My problem with concealer is that it could settle into fine lines that I don’t even know I have, but creamy ones make my eyeliner smudge. I’m still looking for an HG product that twill magically avoid both problems!

  5. You got matched to the darker shade of the DayWear BB Creme?!? That’s weird…you look so much fairer than me in the your pics and I match the Light shade pretty perfectly. I LOVE the texture of it though. It’s so creamy yet still super soft and pillowy. And the coverage is really good too! And I just finished my bottle of Advanced Night Repair. It was good…and it didn’t break me out which is always a plus–but I didn’t see enough visible difference to continue using. I think I prefer antioxidant and vit-c serums for this reason–I really like seeing the brightening and toning effect

    • Hmm I think the light shade is a bit lighter and peachier for me. Also here’s the thing: my face is for some weird reason always lighter than the rest of my body, so when I have the choice between something that’s a bit lighter and something that’s a bit darker, I’d go for the slightly darker option!

I still have to try the Advanced Night Repair. I just got some antioxidant treatment from Aesop though (you’ll see it in the haul post that’s coming up in a couple of days). While I’m not sure what to expect (the ingredient list just seems very impressive), I’m glad to know they work well for you!

  6. Hi Sunny, What a comprehensive counter tour! I know what you mean about the ‘mom’ brand. My mom def. wears EL 😛 I do have the Advanced Night Repair. At some point, I was using a sample, and I think it helped clear my skin. (This means I should probably start again)

  7. Oh I looove that nude lip trick!! How helpful! It looks fantastic; in fact, this is one of the nicest looks I’ve seen on you–EL agrees with you. Ps. My mom uses EL 😉

  8. Yay! I have an eyeshadow from them I like, and a few gwp lipsticks. I want to try their bb cream since I’ve heard good things. That looks like a pretty large counter too!

I like purple liner 🙂 it looks great on you! And the nude lip trick is great too!

    • Thanks Lisa! So when I went I had bareMinerals Urban Nature Prime Time Primer Shadow all over my lids, the browbone shade on the right column of Wet n’ Wild Comfort Zone on the inner third of my lids (it should be a Vex dupe but again I haven’t compared the two next to each other so I can’t say for sure), and Urban Decay Rockstar on the outer third/outer v. Nathalie intensified the outer third/v with Purple Passion and my eyeliner with Black Plum. Hope this helps! I’m head over heels for Black Plum!

    • Hey Justine, I still haven’t got to play with my sample sachets yet so I can’t really tell! I know I’d love that Black Plum liner though, and I’m waiting for the new collection to come out because it seems impressive!

  9. I was also intrigued by the raves for Advanced Night Repair, but when I tested it at the counter on the back of my hand, both the promoter and I were shocked how my skin immediately turned red, like I got a rash! Horrifying! She said she’s never seen anyone’s skin react to it like that before, and I have never seen my skin act like that before either. X(

I’ve been using Kiehl\’s Midnight Recovery Concentrated and it’s been marvelous so far.

    • Oh wow that’s drastic! I do really like Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate as well. It’s taking me forever to finish my deluxe sample, but I would really recommend it!
