A Little Sugar for You: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment & Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment SPF15

Who doesn’t like a little birthday present, especially when it’s a sweet one? A while ago I snagged the Sephora VIB birthday present this year, which is a mini duo of the much raved-about Fresh lip treatment. Want to know just how sweet the original Sugar Lip Treatment and Rose Tinted Lip Treatment are? Read on to find out!

A little bit about how my lips: my lips could be dry and fragile, but ever since I discovered the NUXE Honey Lip Balm about 5 months ago, they have been behaving really well (I am close to finishing the pot and will most probably repurchase, but that’s another story). In fact, they have been behaving so well that I don’t normally need a lip balm during daytime. That’s how my lips work: if they get proper moisturization during nighttime, I am fine throughout the day as long as I am not running around in the cold (or testing drying lip products, which fortunately I don’t do often). If they don’t however, I can use all the lip balm I want in the world, and they will still be dry and chapped.

The mini duo contains 2.2 grams (0.08 oz) each, which means together you get a bit more than one full-size Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment (4.3 grams/0.15 oz). The packaging is pretty well-done. The tubes have a metallic finish, and you have to screw the top open to lift it up. That way the caps will always fit perfectly instead of becoming a bit loose over time. I’ve had that happen with other lip balms I tried!

When I opened the original I thought: wait a minute, I know this smell from somewhere! Took me half an hour before I had my eureka moment: it smells like Yakult (for those of you who don’t know what Yakult is, it’s a Japanese pro-biotic drink. Think about it as drinking yogurt with a much thinner texture). It’s sweet and lemony. I find the smell pleasant, though it fades fast and I don’t think many would be bothered in any case.

The texture of the lip treatment is very emollient. It glides on easily, and doesn’t feel overly slippery or look too shiny. It feels great on, and it does last a few hours. It leaves my lips soft and supple, but since I don’t “need” a lip balm I can’t really tell whether the moisturization actually lasts beyond the time the balm is on!

The Rose Tinted one is a very sheer pink in color. On my pigmented lips it really only makes a smidgen of difference, though when I am just running errands and can’t be bothered to pull out a lipstick/gloss I want to wear, it’ll do. Here is the swatch:

One thing I have to warn you about is the fact that they melt in hot weather. I took the Rose Tinted one back to Taipei, and a bit of the tip broke off. I thought it’s because I had kept it in my bag, but now back in Belgium it’s still melting in my house. Just so you know though, it’s been 30 degrees C/90 degrees F here, which is not at all common. For a product that is made with beeswax and oil, I consider it normal. I’m saying this just so that you know you might want to pay some attention when it gets too warm!

The Lip Treatments have an SPF15, which I appreciate. It is a chemical sunscreen, as you can see in the active ingredients here:

Other ingredients include (taken from the Fresh website):

I am really pleased with the fact that this is not overly-glorified Vaseline that has been spiced up a little!

Bottom line: I wouldn’t be the one who can judge if it does wonders, but if you’re looking for a pleasant lip balm to carry in your bag (NOT in hot weather though), consider Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. I am a big fan of the ingredient list, and the other tinted lip balms look more pigmented than Rose if that’s what you’re looking for!

Have you tried Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment? What’s your go-to lip balm? Do you prefer a heavily tinted lip balm or just a sheer lipstick?

Sunny, your beauty culture translator xx

      • I know in Chicago (where I normally am lol) it gets wayyy hotter than the part of California I’m in right now. Maybe humidity makes a difference? I have had full size ones start to melt but either I’ve caught them in time or they just sort of reform themselves? Or like the others say, maybe it isn’t the same? I haven’t even used my mini ones and I previously had a mini rose one that has just been sitting around! This sounds like a science experiment someone needs to do lol.

  1. Yay! I got this for my birthday too, back in February. I really like it, but I won’t be buying the full size (it’s $22.50 USD or something, crazy!). I took it with me when I went to NYC in February, and when I left it in my pocket and pulled it out to use later, the tip broke off (I’m assuming from my body heat :P)

I actually prefer the Burt’s Bees tinted lip balms. They’re not as thick feeling, and they’re way, way cheaper.

    • I’d purchase this (if I had access to the brand) during a friends & family sale or so on. True it’s pretty pricey, but it is so pleasant to use! I’ve tried some Burt’s Bees ones, but they slide off me SO fast I have to CONSTANTLY reapply!

  2. Love these–I have the original, Sugar Honey (my fave), Sugar Rose, and Sugar Coral. The bigger ones are much better and don’t break off in the heat–though they do get really soft. I got this little Fresh duo back in April for my birthday, The weather was nice and cool then and my tip of mine broke off as well–they’re just really thin and break easily. So don’t worry–the regular sized ones don’t do that, and I’ve carried mine in my makeup back on hot summer days and left it in the car before

  3. I alternate between my cheapie Vaseline which I use for night and Chanel Hydramax which I use to prep my lips before I put on lipstick. I do love their lip scrub, they are so delicious smelling and such a joy to use.

    • Apparently the full-size ones don’t melt as easily, but you’re right about the minis being cute! I don’t even think Fresh is available in Sephora in France. This brand just has to expand ASAP!

  4. Hi Sunny, I can’t wait to get these! Everyone seems to love them; although it is useful to know not to carry them around in the heat 🙂 Thanks for the notice on the chemical sunscreen too; sometimes they don’t agree with me, so I’ll have to see how these work!

  5. I got this same little package recently from Sephora as well since my birthday was this month. Absolutely love them. My lips were actually kinda dry and flakey when I tried them on. After they wore off, my lips felt so much better. 😀

  7. Yay sephora bday gifts, Unfortunately i gave mine away to a friend, the scent, which didn’t really bug my nose gave me killer headaches so watch out. I did like the way they felt on and the slightly tint was nice on someone with very pale lips like me.

    • Ahhh headaches? I’ve been using these for almost 4 months now and I don’t have a problem with that! I hope you’ll find something that is nicely tinted and doesn’t give you headaches!
