The Violet Doesn’t End with the Eyes… Estee Lauder Violet Crush Velvet Lipstick & Rebellious Violet Gloss

After we oohed and ahhed about the new Estee Lauder Violet Underground eyeshadow palette and the Bête Noire Nail Lacquer, you didn’t think the nice violet theme would end there right?

No, because Estee Lauder completed the look with the Violet Crush matte lipstick and Rebellious Violet lipgloss! I am going to swatch and review them for you today, and you will get to see them in action soon in another post!

The Estee Lauder Velvet Lipstick has the same packaging with several other lines. It is not hefty, and to be honest I wish the cap would weigh a little more (because it feels like plastic), but the gold gives it a luxurious touch. The logo part also holds the cap firmly in place, so you wouldn’t have to worry about it becoming too loose.

Violet Crush is one of the two limited edition soft matte creme lipsticks. On me it is a bright fuchsia with a blue/violet undertone, but I think this shade is done quite right and won’t be too cool or too bright for most people to pull off. It drags a little when I put it on (very common problem with matte lipsticks, especially one that doesn’t even have a creamy sheen), but otherwise it is easy to work with and isn’t drying on the lips. The finish really is completely matte. It doesn’t mask lip lines, so do remember to prep your lips before putting this on! There isn’t a lot of color transfer when I eat or drink, and the formula is amazingly long-wearing (we’re talking about 6 hours or more here). If you want the color to be less intense, you can always dab it on or put it on the bottom lip before pressing your lips together. That way it becomes a lovely stain that is wearable for different occasions!

Rebellious Violet Pure Color Gloss is a sheer violet with an insane amount of multi-chrome shimmer. The sponge applicator is a bit bouncy and easy to use, and I like the golden cap with the brand’s initial. The shimmer is very fine, and I can’t feel it unless I press my lips together hard enough.

The texture of the gloss is non-sticky, and it wears for about 3 hours. The coverage is sheer, but it does give lips a purplish tint and a lot of pretty shimmer. It also makes my lips look plumper, which is not something every gloss can do! It is very lovely layered on top of Violet Crush.

Here are the two shades swatched:

Both products have a sweetish scent that isn’t too strong and doesn’t bother me personally, and it goes away fast enough.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a fuchsia that is bright yet wearable (on top of that pretty universally-flattering), take a look at Violet Crush. It does drag a little and fails to mask lip lines, but otherwise feels comfortable on and isn’t drying. If you want a gloss that has a purplish tint and a lot of pretty shimmer, then Rebellious Violet is a good candidate! These two work beautifully together, so make sure you try to layer them!

Are these colors you would wear? What is your favorite matte lipstick formula? Would you wear a purplish lipgloss?

    • They’ll be up this week I promise! I thought it’d make more sense if I do two looks using everything in the collection, and that’s why I didn’t include face photos in this one 🙂

  1. Hi Sunny, I’m surprised by how wearable Violet Crush and Rebellious Violet look when swatched. Of course they’re too daring for the likes of me, but I can imagine they’d look beautiful on!
