2 MAC Products for Instant Eye Definition: MAC Zoom Waterfast Lash Mascara, Coffee Eye Pencil

I used to use only waterproof mascara because they tend to hold curls better, and I lived somewhere very hot and humid. My recent experience has convinced me that non-waterproof mascara could be just as good, but rest assured I’ll need some good waterproof mascara for my trip back home.

In the frenzy of summer waterproof mascara releases, MAC has jumped on the bandwagon with Zoom Waterfast Lash Mascara. For some extra definition, I’m also reviewing the Coffee Eye Pencil in the same post. Curious yet?

MAC Zoom Waterfast Lash is my first MAC mascara. The cap is smooth, but the tube has an interesting texture. I think this gives me a better grip, which is welcome. The wand is small and easy to work with, even on the bottom lashes.

What I like about this mascara:

+ It lengthens well.

+ The wand is user-friendly. It is easy to maneuver even on my teeny tiny bottom lashes.

+ It really is waterproof. I have tested it out at a wedding so I know it can at least resist some mild tearing up.

+ It holds curls.

+ It does make lashes a bit crunchy, but not as stiff as some of the waterproof mascara I have tried before.

+ It does not smudge.

+ The effect is quite good with one coat.

What I don’t like so much about this mascara:

– It clumps easily. Even with the second coat it could be obvious.

– It doesn’t volumize as much. To be fair though, the pitch only promises curls and length, not volume.

– It flakes. It flakes tiny bit by tiny bit, so it is not clearly visible (I personally am not bothered, and it is easy to clean it up). However, I do suspect it for flaking into my eyes sometimes and cause discomfort.

Here is my bare eye, one coat of Zoom Waterfast Lash on my upper lashes, and two coats of Zoom Waterfast Lash on my upper lashes, one on my bottom lashes, and my lower lash line lined with Coffee Eye Pencil:

Bottom line: I would wear Zoom Waterfast Lash when I need a waterproof mascara, or when I only have time for one coat of mascara, as it lengthens quite well with one. The fact that the flaked-off bits could get into my eyes is the only thing that I am worried about. However, as I have repeated several times before, mascara works very differently for different people, and a fellow blogger told me that it doesn’t flake on her at all.

MAC Coffee Eye Pencil is a solid dark brown eyeliner. I would say it is mostly neutral. This is a little raved-about product, but from what I’ve read, most of its fans love it for the fact that it has no red undertone and doesn’t make them look tired.

Coffee is not as “creamy” as Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners. If those break on you all the time (I have heard people complain about this), take a look at Coffee. At the same time, it doesn’t tug or drag either. One pass delivers enough color. On my upper waterline it stays put quite well, but I can’t say the same for my lower waterline (though just to be honest not much stays put there). On my lower lash line, with a primer and some eyeshadow on top, it doesn’t smudge all day, though if my day is long I can see the color fading a little.

Bottom line: I think Coffee Eye Pencil is a solid product, and if you are in the market for a deep true brown, Coffee is something you might want to take into consideration.

Have you tried any MAC mascaras? What is your go-to waterproof mascara? What is your favorite brown eyeliner?

    • Haha because it’s hard to remove? I used to have to stick to waterproof mascaras because I lived somewhere too humid and warm. If you use a bi-phase remover it’s just OK!

    • Hey Diana, yup it really is waterproof and does an awful lot with one coat. It’s just that unfortunately it flakes a bit on me. Not everybody has the same problem though, so you should definitely try!

    • This is the first MAC mascara I have ever tried! I heard the new Extended Play is very amazing as well. MAC has probably upped their game in the mascara department!

    • LOL Coffee is very much neglected with the other cooler eyeliners MAC has, but I find it gliding on easily enough and stays OK well on my lower lash line!

  1. MAC mascara doesn’t work for me as the flakes are really bad. I have never tried their eye pencils except for their powerpoint eye pencils and it’s pretty good. Smudge proof!

    • Hey Ruby, join the flaking club :p It’s a pity because it seems to work well for others! I have to check out more MAC eyeliners. I started out with UD which I still love and use all the time, but there are some MAC colors I’d love to own!

  2. Oohh I have a coworker that wears MAC Zoom Lash & I swear I’m constantly staring at her lashes b/c they always look so great! Unfortunately, Coffee Eye Pencil just didn’t work for me. I found it to be way too hard & had to really drag it across my lashes for it to work- just not my cup of tea :/

    • Haha Louise you crack me up! I have major eyelash envy all the time as well :p

Too bad you find Coffee too hard. It glides on easily enough for me. Maybe not as creamy as the UD ones but definitely not poking my eyes out with it either!

  3. My favorite waterproof mascara is the Maybelline falsies. I really like how it holds my curls without clumping or flaking. It lasts all day (8-10) hours. I have never tried a MAC mascara but I also don’t feel the need to.

    • Hey Em, I love those too! I’ve been testing out way too many new mascaras, but my old go-toes are definitely the waterproof Maybelline fatty tubes! Mascaras are very curious products. The more expensive ones don’t necessarily perform better, so feel free to stick to Maybelline! I know I would have if I didn’t have a blog πŸ™‚

      • oooh don’t get me wrong. I love trying new mascaras, but I stick with the drugstore ones because they are slightly more affordable. If it doesn’t work, I don’t lose as much money. My lashes are short and stick straight so not many mascaras work for me. I just haven’t found one better than Maybelline’s. I will just have to keep reading your blog to see if something new comes up πŸ˜€

      • I understand! You are totally right! I wouldn’t really invest in a high-end mascara unless I can get a tiny tube to test it out first. It’d be heartbreaking to spend 30 bucks on something that doesn’t work at all πŸ™‚

    • Hey Becca! Yup Coffee is a very dark brown, and I think a lot of people would appreciate that. The smudging thing varies a lot, but I hope it’ll hold up on you!

  4. Both look great on you! I don’t user waterproof mascara all that much, though. I find it’s too rough on my lashes for day-to-day wear. I do like having one or two lying around for those special occasions that I might need backup (weddings, swimming, etc). Coffee brown is such a perfect dark espresso! MAC makes excellent liners, that’s for sure!

    • Thanks Danielle! You’re right. Waterproof mascaras are a bit harsher. I used to use ONLY waterproof mascaras because I lived somewhere too hot and humid, but nowadays I do appreciate non-waterproof ones more. It’s just so much easier to remove!

  5. I definitely want a brown eyeliner… Hmm! Thanks for reminding me! πŸ™‚ I don’t know if I’ve had a waterproof mascara recently but I definitely prefer it. You still have to try Dior maximizer an maybelline mascaras.

I’ve never been into Mac really… Don’t know why! Many of the products just seem average to me. Can’t figure it out. Do you have favorite Mac products that are unique and better than other brands?

    • Haha Joyce I personally appreciate brown eyeliners, because they define without being harsh. Actually most of the time I prefer brown to black on my lower lash line (when I’m not doing the crazy colorful liner thing haha)! I have been experimenting with the Dior Maximizer and it’s pretty cool! My lashes are very 3-dimensional with it! Maybelline mascaras are my old loves. I’d still go back to them even now to be honest πŸ™‚

I think MAC makes great shimmery eyeshadows. Shades such as Sumptuous Olive and Humid are definitely still some of my favorite eyeshadows. I don’t blindly buy everything just because it’s MAC (but the same goes to every brand), but I can see why it’s appealing. It just has such a big range of products that if you walk into a MAC store you can have it all!
